Plastic Definitions

PLASTIC IS A TERM LIKE THE WORD FRUIT – IT MEANS A GROUP OF THINGS THAT HAVE SIMILAR CHARACTERISTICS BUT ARE NOT THE SAME

Pineapple – Apple;  Bucket – Detergent Bottle;  Clam Shell – Water Bottle

 #1/PET

Water Bottles, Coke Bottles, Any Color

 #2/HDPE Natural & Color

Milk Jugs/Vinegar jugs , Clothes Detergent Bottles, Folgers Cans

Residential #1 & #2 are any container that the neck is smaller than the base.

 #3 – #7

Residential Containers and Container Closures that did not get pulled at the #1/PET or #2/HD stations. This does include clamshells. This can also include “rigids” – buckets, laundry baskets, items/larger containers that are made of plastic.

NO Pet Food Bags! NO Food Grade film! NO Bags! NO Strapping

 INDUSTRIAL FILM

Film that comes in from companies in a large quantity and is all similar  – different colors can be similar.  Warehouse supervisors will be clear about these situations.

 CONSUMER FILM

This is the material wrapped around items being purchased in multiple amounts; paper towel, toilet tissue, dog food. This material can be stretched when you push your thumb against it.

 FOOD GRADE FILM

This material  – unless handled as an industrial film – is a BIG NO – it has been designed with multiple barriers of different plastics to be microwaved, frozen, dropped in a pot of boiling water. All while taking care of the food inside. This reduces a bale of #3 – #7 to trash. As will pet food bags – again multi-layer barriers have been melded together to protect the printing and the food.
